Mulch vs. Rock vs. Bark — Which Ground Cover is Right for You?

Ground cover plays a big role in how your yard looks and functions. In the Pacific Northwest, especially in places like Maple Valley where we get a lot of rain and seasonal changes, choosing the right material can make maintenance easier and plants healthier.

Mulch

  • Pros: Retains moisture, suppresses weeds, breaks down to enrich soil.

  • Cons: Needs to be refreshed every 1–2 years; can wash away in heavy rain.

Rock

  • Pros: Very low maintenance; doesn’t break down; great for modern or xeriscape designs.

  • Cons: Doesn’t improve soil; can overheat plant roots in summer; weeds still grow through without landscape fabric.

Bark (like hemlock or cedar nuggets)

  • Pros: Natural look, great for forest-style gardens; lasts longer than fine mulch.

  • Cons: Can float or shift during heavy rains; still needs topping up over time.

Your choice depends on your style, how much work you want to do, and what your yard needs in terms of moisture and soil health.
